Foucault argues that the female body is a “text” written through the “regulated norms of cultural life, and that through the pursuit of an ever-changing, elusive idea of femininity, female bodies become docile bodies-- bodies whose forces and energies are habituated to external regulation, subjection, transformation, and improvement.”

Through Pinterest, women are engaged in the act of internalized regulation and discipline. The feminine nature of posts on the site stems from the overwhelming amount of female users, who are constructing and perpetuating an unrealistic, materialistic view of the ideal women and lifestyle by uploading and repining content as a way to play with possible future selves. The images circulated of dream weddings, lifestyles, fashion, and physiques are reflective of how success is defined in our society through stereotypical ideals of beauty and conspicuous consumption.
